Anchorage, United States - March 13, 2025 Mount Spurr is stirring, and experts are on high alert as the likelihood of an eruption in the coming weeks or months spikes. The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) sounded the alarm on March 12, 2025, after spotting significant gas emissions on March 7 and 11. Video evidence shows the summit steaming ominously, captured by M. Mitchell of AVO/USGS. During overflights, scientists clocked elevated volcanic gas pouring from the peak, alongside newly active fumaroles at Crater Peak vent. Earthquakes and ground deformation are rattling the area too, hinting at fresh magma creeping into the crust below. This unrest screams trouble, with explosive eruptions like those in 1953 and 1992 on the cards. Back then, ash clouds soared hundreds of miles, dusting southcentral Alaska with up to a quarter-inch of fallout. AVO warns seismic activity, gas, and heat could ramp up further, offering days or weeks of notice if the volcano blows. Unlike Kilauea’s lava flows, Spurr’s past blasts were smaller than Mt. St. Helens in 1980 but still packed a punch. Alaska’s holding its breath as the clock ticks.
