This is the terrifying moment a home was pounded with thick hailstones in northern Thailand.

A mum and her child were inside their residence when the freak weather struck in Ban Huai San Don Chan, Mae Lao District, Chiang Rai, on March 18.

The mother said they were in the bedroom on the second floor when the storm hit.

Dramatic footage shows the parent closing the door as a thunderclap shakes the house, causing her to shout in fear. The driving rain also dampened the interior, with hailstones scattered across the floor.

She added that they took shelter in the bathroom, waiting for the storm to pass before they were finally able to emerge.

The Meteorological Department forecasts summer storms, including thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and lightning, across most regions of the country at the start of this week, followed by lower temperatures.

Thailand has a tropical monsoon climate with a hot, rainy season from May to October, driven by the southwest monsoon winds. Thunderstorms are common during the summer rainy season, sometimes with heavy downpours, gusty winds, and lightning. Major cities like Bangkok can experience urban flooding from the intense rainfall.
