Kilauea volcano eruption monitored by helicopter in Hawaii
A helicopter monitored the Kilauea volcano eruption in Hawaii.
Authorities from the US Geological Survey's (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory conducted an aircraft overflight to assess the outburst in Halema'uma'u at Kilauea's summit on March 5, around 10 am, during Episode 12 of the volcanic activity.
Sporadic lava flows shifted between the south and north cones before the episode concluded at 10:37 am.
Aerial footage shows a small lava fountain and smoke billowing into the sky.
Scientists also collected lava samples from the northern part of the crater, which will be analyzed to support the ongoing hazard assessment of the eruption.
Officials said the data will help experts better understand the volcano's activity.
Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.
