A concrete post fell from a building and crushed parked cars below following an earthquake.

The tremors caused the structure to break loose and plummet onto the vehicles in Chiang Mai, Thailand, a day after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck neighbouring Myanmar.

Footage shows the slab falling onto the cars, smashing their roofs and windscreens on March 29.

Convenience store workers who were on the other side of the street were heard screaming.

One of the workers, Krotchakorn Sonkratok, said: 'It happened at an apartment behind Lanna Hospital.

'It fell onto the parking area, damaging a Mercedes Benz car.'

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles) around 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Monywa on March 28.

Residents ran from their homes when they felt the tremors at around 1:20 pm local time. In Myanmar, at least 1,600 people were killed and more than 4,000 injured.

The quake destroyed buildings, bridges, and dams, leaving many areas in ruins. Communication remains difficult as mobile networks are down, and access to electricity and the internet is limited.
