Helicopter grapples with wildfire in Stuart, Florida
A helicopter is being used to tackle a wildfire in Stuart, Florida.
The Gator Fire consumed approximately 150 acres (60.7 hectares), prompting firefighters to deploy aerial firefighting efforts in Palm City on Thursday, March 27.
Authorities issued voluntary evacuation orders for about a dozen homes north of Martin Highway, between SW Boat Ramp Avenue and 84th Street.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office collaborated with Martin County Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service to contain the fire, using helicopters equipped with Bambi Buckets to drop water directly onto the flames.
On Friday, local media reported that the wildfire was 90 per cent contained, having burned approximately 230 acres (93.1 hectares).
No injuries or structural damage were reported, but residents were advised to remain vigilant and follow guidance from emergency personnel.
The Florida Forest Service (FFS) is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, on March 26, a brush fire near Naples forced residents to flee their homes.
As of March 27, the FFS reported 59 wildfires burning across Florida, consuming a total of 28,532 acres (11,545 hectares).
Many of these fires are in drought-prone regions, with an average Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) above 500, indicating that dry conditions are fueling more intense and rapidly spreading fires.
The state's most devastating wildfire occurred in 1998, known as the Florida Firestorm. The blaze was so immense that it required an unprecedented response, with 10,000 firefighters from 47 states deployed to contain it.
The 1998 inferno forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents and destroyed 337 homes and 33 businesses, making it one of the most destructive fire events in Florida's history.
