A Catholic procession honouring Mary and Jesus began in Guatemala.

The religious celebration was organised by the Cuasiparroquia Personal Castrense San Miguel Arcangel of the First Military Police Brigade 'Guardia de Honor' of the Guatemalan Army on March 30.

The procession started in front of the Ministry of National Defence and proceeded towards Iglesia Yurrita in Zone 4, with participants carrying images of Jesus Christ and Mary, Mother of Jesus, as a symbol of reverence.

Authorities said the event saw participation of students, as well as members of the Volunteer Firefighters Corps, who joined the procession along Sixth Avenue.

The route passed the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and concluded at Campo Marte, with crowds gathering to witness the solemn procession.

The occasion, part of the wider Holy Week celebrations, is a significant tradition in the country. In Guatemala, processions are inherited from Spain but have over time become deeply rooted in the Guatemalan Catholic faith.

Each year, locals and visitors alike join in to profess their faith during Holy Week celebrations, a time when Catholics around the world commemorate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
