This is the terrifying moment a waterspout tornado tore through a field near homes in Myanmar.

Ko Khant was heading home when he spotted the vortex from a distance in the coastal region of Yangon on April 9.

The towering tornado can be seen swirling in the air, moving across the landscape.

Local media reported that there were no injuries, but some homes were damaged by the freak weather, which came just days after an earthquake ravaged Mandalay.

At least two other watersport tornadoes were seen on the same day.

Ko Khant said: 'I was scared when I saw the clouds. I thought the tornado would destroy homes.'

The Ministry of Humanitarian and Disaster Management (MOHADM) and the National Harmonic Government warned that strong rains and winds could hit Myanmar, or Burma, due to low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, as well as cloudy mountain conditions.

Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes but form over water and are generally weaker. There are two types - tornadic waterspouts and fair weather waterspouts.

Tornadic waterspouts form over water or move from land to water. A funnel cloud descends from the storm's base due to the rotating updraft. It becomes a tornadic waterspout upon touching water.

Fair weather Waterspouts form in calm weather, often under developing cumulus clouds, and are not associated with thunderstorms.

Warm water heats the air above it, creating instability and rising moist air. A developing cumulus cloud then forms as the warm air rises and cools before winds coming from different directions cause rotation near the surface and a vortex is established.
