A man with rubbish collected from a litter pick was kicked out of a recycling centre - because he was on a bike.

Julian Hutchison, 74, regularly uses his bicycle to tow waste he has picked-up in the local area.

But on a recent trip he was told by a staff member at recycling centre in Bude, Cornwall that he was not allowed in on his bike.

He was told by the staff member that he would have to come back in a car.

John filmed the encounter and posted it online where it has gathered almost 60K views.

In the video Mr Hutchinson can be heard telling the staff member "I won't come back in a car because I don't ****ing own one" - who later apologised for his "rude words" on social media. "

Cornwall Council has since verified that cyclists are allowed at its recycling centres and the booking system.

Mr Hutchison posted the video on Tuesday (April 8) and said: "After today's litter pick on the A39 meeting lots of nice people this chap approached me. "

''It has made me wonder for the first time if I should give up what I treat as a hobby.

''I apologise for any rude words I used. It appears identifying people through ANPR is more important than cleaning our world.

"Update don't worry this hiccup will not stop me doing what i love and Thank You for your support."

"Update. Thank you, people of Cornwall. Your support and sharing, emailing, showing a united front, including local political parties who also messaged to help turn this around. Bicycles can enter to drop rubbish! "

''I hope this also teaches you all

how the power of people can make a change, but we must stand together to be the change."

In the video the member of staff approaches Mr Hutchison and says: "Just to let you know since the rules have changed with the ANPR and everything else that technically you're not allowed in here on your bike. "

''You need to come in a vehicle I'm afraid and you can't walk in as a pedestrian either I'm afraid."

To which the littler picker replies saying he has been litter picking and has been visiting the centre for years.

The staff member says he understands but repeats that unless he is in a vehicle, he can't come in.

Mr Hutchinson then asks that all staff work the same way as that was his third visit to the recycling centre in three days, and he we was reprimanded by other staff.

The worker tells him to come back in a car. "I won't come back in a car because I don't ****ing own one." "

"Then you wouldn't be able to come back I'm afraid," replies the employee."

"The world's gone bloody mad," is Mr Hutchison's reaction. "

"Those are the rules I'm afraid, sir, there's no pedestrian access," adds the member of staff, telling another customer that people can't come in on a bike, only cars. "

The worker says that with the new booking system, there could be more people attempting to visit on bikes.

Mr Hutchinson is known for litter picking in the area wearing a kilt. He said he tries to do it "most days"."

He explained that it had been the second time he was banned from the Bude dump for his mode of transport.

The first time was around 2010 when he visited the tip with a trailer attached to his van.

Two years ago Julian decided he wasn't going to drive anymore so he now uses bicycles.

He said he had been to Bude tip in "all sorts of transports" - and even went there in the past on a bicycle but this time the staff reacted differently."

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: "We are currently trialling a booking system at seven of the HWRCs which requires all visitors to book a slot in advance. We will update the booking form to enable cyclists to book."

"Cyclists are permitted to visit Cornwall's Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs). For safety reasons, pedestrians are not permitted at the sites."

"We are thankful to all the volunteers that help keep Cornwall clean. Anyone planning a litter pick is asked to register with Clean Cornwall and let us know when and where litter picks are taking place. Once registered you can borrow litter picking equipment such as litter pickers and hi-vis jackets, arrange a collection of the waste and use our public liability insurance if you don't have your own."

Mr Hutchinson said: "Within about 36 hours the rules changed. The power of people made this happen. So I will visit when passing once again."

"It's just how I think people interpret rules. It's good I can still go there - i don't have to travel 2 or 3 miles away to drop the litter."
