The Kanlaon volcano spewed ash over homes as it belched a 2,600ft high gas plume in the Philippines.

State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said three ash emission events, each lasting 41 to 253 minutes, were detected, while there were 33 volcanic earthquakes recorded.

The volcano released 1,850 tonnes of sulfur dioxide in a day, the agency said.

The incident comes six days after an 'explosive eruption' that launched a 13,000-ft ash plume on April 8.

Kanlaon, which straddles Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental provinces on Negros island, is one of the 24 active volcanoes in the country.

It is currently under Alert Level 3, indicating 'increased chances for sudden and even stronger explosive eruptions'. The volcano's last explosive eruption was on December 9.

The Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
