Sutherland, Scotland — A mesmerizing aurora lit up the skies over northern Scotland on the night of April 15, 2025, beautifully captured by Monika Focht of Monika Focht Photography. Using an outdoor camera, Focht documented vibrant swirls of purple and green shimmering across the dark skies—an awe-inspiring display triggered by a geomagnetic storm.

The storm was caused by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) that struck Earth's magnetosphere on April 16, as forecasted by EarthSky. The charged solar particles from the CME interacted with Earth’s magnetic field, exciting atmospheric gases and producing vivid auroral colors—greens from oxygen and purples from nitrogen—above altitudes of 80 km, according to Self Catering Scotland.

Sutherland, known for its high latitude and low light pollution, is one of the UK’s best northern lights viewing spots, as noted by Venture North. The ongoing solar maximum cycle, expected to peak between 2025 and 2026, has increased auroral activity worldwide, making events like this more frequent.
