Illinois Soldiers Return Home from Operation Spartan Shield Deployment
Cheers, hugs, and heartfelt tears filled the air during a welcome home ceremony in Peoria, Illinois, on April 12, 2025, as soldiers from the Illinois Army National Guard returned from a nearly year-long deployment. Among them was U.S. Army Sgt. Luke Purcell, a combat engineer with Company B, 766th Brigade Engineer Battalion. Families like his waited eagerly, some with signs in hand, as loved ones reunited after their service overseas in support of Operation Spartan Shield.
The 1-178th Infantry Regiment and Company B, 766th Brigade Engineer Battalion deployed in June 2024 to Southwest Asia, where they worked to strengthen defense partnerships and build allied capacity. Their return was met with gratitude from the community, recognizing not only the soldiers’ dedication but also the sacrifices made by their families.
