HOPEWELL, Va. — The Hopewell Police Department, in partnership with VFW Post 637 and local community leaders, surprised a beloved neighborhood figure with a new powered scooter after his original one broke down months ago.

Mr. Mason, well known in the Davisville Apartment complex for his positivity, kindness, and presence at community events, had his mobility severely limited after his scooter failed—impacting his ability to engage with local youth and residents.

When Sgt. Hewett learned of the situation, he mobilized his squad, the community engagement team, the Hopewell Redevelopment and Housing Authority (HRHA), and the local VFW to help. Together, they secured and donated a new powered scooter for Mr. Mason.

The surprise presentation took place at the Davisville Community Center and was attended by residents, officers, media, and family members.

“The Hopewell Police Department was honored to give back to a community member who is always spreading a positive message,” the department wrote on Facebook.

The heartfelt gesture highlights the power of community partnerships and the department’s commitment to supporting those who give back.
