United States - April 17, 2025 Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiʻi - Episode 18 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 10:01 p.m. HST on April 16, 2025, when lava started overflowing from the north vent. Earlier in the evening, glow from the south vent increased around 9:10 p.m. HST. Regular spattering began, with bursts occurring every 10 to 20 seconds. Spatter bursts continued to grow in size and frequency until about 9:30 p.m. HST. Dome fountains reaching heights of 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 meters) formed at that time. The lava level within the vent continued to rise. By 9:45 p.m. HST, a visible lava pond had formed. Currently, the eruption is feeding lava flows that travel down the north vent spillway. The flows extend a short distance onto the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor. Tilt measurements at UWD are relatively flat. However, seismic tremor that began at 9:30 p.m. HST remains elevated. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas emissions are high. During recent episodes, emissions have reached between 20,000 and 50,000 tonnes per day or more. Similar amounts of gas are expected if high fountaining activity occurs during episode 17. Visitors to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and nearby residents may be exposed to Peleʻs hair and other small volcanic glass fragments. Such exposure also occurred during episode 16.
