A spiky bundle of joy has arrived at the Milwaukee County Zoo! A baby prehensile-tailed porcupine, called a porcupette, was born weighing 527 grams and has already grown to 770 grams in just two weeks. The baby is thriving under the watchful care of mom Quinn, who has been incredibly gentle and attentive during their exclusive bonding time. Dad Seamus has been temporarily separated to allow the pair uninterrupted time to connect.

From the moment of birth, the porcupette was strong, mobile, and curious—quickly exploring its surroundings and now even chewing on branches and testing out everything in reach. While the sex of the baby has yet to be determined, zookeepers continue to monitor growth with daily weigh-ins. Visitors can stop by the nocturnal side of the Small Mammals building to catch a glimpse of Quinn and her little one in action. This birth is part of the Zoo’s participation in the AZA’s Species Survival Plan® (SSP), supporting the conservation of prehensile-tailed porcupines, native to the forests of South America.
