At around 40 meters deep, without fins or a tank, her descent was smooth and controlled. Yet on her ascent, mental doubt overshadowed her physical endurance.

Mid-stroke, she paused, held her head, and made the decision to let go of the dive. Her safety diver, Mikey, positioned below on a scooter, responded instinctively, towing her calmly to the surface to conserve her energy for another day.

I was probably about 40 metres underwater—no fins, no tank—just me and my breath.

I was training for a national record in Constant Weight No Fins (CNF), one of the most demanding freediving disciplines. The descent felt smooth. But on the way up, doubt crept in. My body had more to give—but my mind tapped out.

I paused mid-stroke, held my head, and let go of the dive. My safety, Mikey, already deep on a scooter, understood instantly. Without a word, he gave me a ride to the surface, keeping me calm and conserving energy for the days ahead.

It wasn’t the dive I planned—but maybe it was the one I needed.
