This is the shocking moment a rampaging drunk shopper lathered himself in cooking oil before being subdued by customers and guards.

The shirtless customer stormed into the store before hurling food from the shelves and grabbing the bottle of the golden liquid in front of confused locals.

He allegedly destroyed several store displays and smashed windows as security guards tried to control him in front of terrified visitors in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Dramatic footage shows baton-wielding officers squaring off with the rampaging holidaymaker. Other customers joined the fray by hurling fresh produce and groceries while they wrestled him to the ground on April 21.

Police later arrived at the scene and detained the suspect, who was believed to have been drunk. They said he was a tourist from Ghana.

Shaken resident Hilman Luthfi, 31, said the man's outburst began at his apartment in Kalibata, where he used an iron rod to strike a worker painting the floor.

When apartment staff tried to question him over the alleged attack, he was said to have become violent.

Hilman added: 'I locked myself indoors and stayed away from him. He looked so dangerous, I was afraid he would attack me.'

Commissioner Mansur, district police chief, said the suspect had been caught and taken to the hospital before being remanded in custody.

He added: 'We believe he was drunk and had an argument with his wife, and he wanted to vent his anger.

'We arrived at the building after receiving the report from the residents. It is suspected he was under the influence of alcohol. We tried to negotiate with him to release the children, who were in the apartment, but he refused to listen. He shoved them toward us before escaping to the supermarket.

'We chased him and he bathed himself in oil so that his body would be slippery and hard to grab on to. We wanted to secure him earlier but we had to be careful because he seemed to be carrying a sharp weapon.'

Authorities said the man was taken to a hospital to undergo medical checks.
