Britain’s Princess Anne, New Zealand’s prime minister and Australia’s governor-general were among the participants who paid tribute to the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who lost their lives in tragic battles 110 years ago. As the sun began to rise, the ceremony started with a mournful Mauri lament, setting the tone for a solemn observance that included prayers and the laying of wreaths. Attendees waited for the service while watching documentaries about the Gallipoli campaign, which lasted from February 1915 and January 1916 during World War I, on a giant screen set up at the ceremony area, huddled in sleeping bags and blankets. During the ceremony Princess Anne said "The Australians and New Zealanders who landed here on the 25th of April 1915 came from Young Nations or Ancient lands." "As the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps near the Turkish coastline each man understood that he would be tested in battle." Speaking about the human cost of the war, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said "Anzac troops came ashore here shoulder to shoulder with their brothers half a world away. Some anticipated an adventure far from home but as the sun rose and the shadows drained from the gullies, it was not adventure that greeted them." Anzac stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps that fought in Canakkale in 1915 and later in the Middle East and Europe alongside their allies. Anzac Day commemorates the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand soldiers' landing in Gallipoli on April 25, 1915.
