Oil drum explodes while being cut with up angle grinder
This is the shocking moment an oil drum exploded while being cut with an angle grinder.
Workshop owner Faruk Ograk was trying to split open the empty container when it suddenly blasted at a welding workshop in Bingol, Turkey.
CCTV footage shows Faruk's colleagues standing in front of the drum as he sliced it with the tool on April 28.
Moments later, sparks from the grinder ignited vapours inside the canister, causing it to blow up violently.
The force of the blast sent the lid flying into the air, narrowly missing the owner's head. The trio can be seen jumping back in shock as the drum detonated.
The man reportedly sustained minor injuries to his hand, while two other workers nearby were unhurt but visibly shaken.
Experts warn that even empty oil drums can retain flammable vapours, posing a significant explosion risk when exposed to heat or sparks.
The UK Health and Safety Executive advises that drums should be thoroughly cleaned and de-gassed before any hot work is undertaken.
In 2019, a farm contractor in Cornwall, UK, suffered serious injuries when an oil drum exploded under similar circumstances.
