Tourist sparks outrage by feeding wild monkeys on Thai island
A tourist sparked outrage by feeding wild monkeys on an island in southern Thailand.
The male holidaymaker flouted warning signs to feed a bag of crisps to the macaques at Monkey Bay in Krabi.
Footage shows him throwing pieces of junk food at the wild animals perched on a rock as other visitors filmed on their phones.
Thai tour guide Patrick Suwannasith shouted for the tourists to stop, but his warnings were ignored as the man continued lobbing crisps at the monkeys.
The frustrated local said he has reported the incident to the national parks authorities and submitted the video as evidence.
Officials from the Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park said on May 4 they were investigating the incident.
A spokesman said: 'The location of the incident is Ao Ling Sam Hat, located on Phi Phi Don Island, where there are many monkeys living on the beaches. The park has put up signs prohibiting feeding them and other wild animals.
'We have also continuously disseminated this information to create understanding among tourists, business operators, and the general public that such acts are banned.
'As for this case, officials are currently tracking down the tourist in question to take action in accordance with relevant regulations and laws.'
Authorities said feeding monkeys negatively affects their natural behaviour and encourages them to rely on humans instead of foraging in the wild.
