Davkova said that North Macedonia and Croatia have traditionally friendly relations and that these relations will be further developed. Croatian President Milanovic said only North Macedonian people can decide what is important for North Macedonia. He warned North Macedonian people saying: "Don't be a victim of any coercion when it comes to EU membership." North Macedonia applied for EU membership in 2004 and received candidate country status in 2005 after Croatia. North Macedonia, whose EU accession negotiations began in 2020, became a member of NATO in the same year.
