A woman unexpectedly gave birth in her bed with her fiancé unwrapping the umbilical cord from their newborn's neck.

Iyanna Brown, 27, was due to give birth on July 7 but on the morning of June 26, she began to feel light cramping.

Hours later, while making dinner, her water broke.

She and her fiancé Enoch Mitchell, 47, began preparing to leave for the hospital but the baby had other plans.

As Iyanna was putting on her trousers, she suddenly felt her daughter's head crowning.

Enoch had to quickly rip off her trousers and deliver the baby right then and there.

Once the baby had arrived, Enoch then had to unwrap the umbilical cord from around her neck so she could take her first breath.

Iyanna, a stay-at-home mother from Winona, Minnesota, said: "It was a scary yet beautiful experience. "

"I really wasn't expecting it to go that quickly."

While Iyanna is no stranger to childbirth, her previous deliveries were in the hospital with medication.

For her fourth baby, the plan was to have a water birth at the hospital.

Just two days earlier, she had gone to a doctor's appointment where she was told she was only one centimetre dilated.

So when the cramps started, she didn't think she was in labour.

She said: "When the contractions became more consistent, I called a nurse who told me to start thinking about coming in."

"Shortly after, my water broke and from then on it's just a blur."

"I remember feeling her head in my trousers and yelling for Enoch."

Enoch rushed in, helped remove her trousers and guided their daughter out - first the head then the shoulders.

Iyanna said: "He was honestly amazing."

But things took a terrifying turn when their baby, now named Maya Mitchell, was born with the umbilical cord wrapped twice around her neck.

Enoch managed to unwrap the first loop and Iyanna helped with the second.

Moments later, Maya let out her first cry.

Iyanna said: "This was the really scary part because we didn't have any assistance."

"She was turning purple and I was so proud of my man and how brave he was."

"Once the cord was off and she started to breathe, it was just complete relief. "

"But I was also in shock over everything that had just happened."

Enoch immediately called 911 and paramedics arrived soon after to check over both mom and baby.

Maya was confirmed to be healthy, weighing 6lb and 12oz.

Lyanna said: "She's been doing great ever since and is steadily gaining weight."

"I'm just amazed I got through it without any pain meds and without tearing!"
