Southwest China's Guizhou Province has been preparing for the incoming Dragon Boat Festival by practicing generations-old traditions -- making zongzi, a sticky rice dumpling across urban communities and mountain villages. In Fuquan, a county-level city in Guizhou, local communities are hosting festive events to celebrate the three-day holiday from May 30 to June 1, including both zongzi-wrapping contest and an unusual "zongzi-fishing" games. Participants used special rods to hook the pyramid-shaped sticky rice dumplings from a distance, with cheers erupting as each was successfully caught. "I participated in the zongzi fishing competition. I caught three within two minutes. There were prizes to win and I can take home the zongzi I fished," said Wang Lianmei, a resident. Nearby, another group demonstrated the more traditional approach - deft hands folding bamboo leaves into cones, packing them with glutinous rice and tying them with a string. Within minutes, piles of plump zongzi took shape, bearing the unique style of different makers. The traditions run deeper in remote Xinhua village in Guizhou's Shiqian County, where families prepare "sister-zongzi" - distinctive twin dumplings bound together with rice straw and simmered for hours in local Tai tea. Villagers begin at dawn, gathering fresh bamboo leaves and ingredients -- sticky rice, chestnuts and other stuffing-- before wrapping the dumplings using techniques that passed down through generations. The tea infusion gives the treats a delicate fragrance and digestive benefits. "Our sister-zongzi is boiled in Tai Tea. It has many benefits: it has a tea-like aroma, a very good taste, and is not greasy for the elderly and children. It is also helpful for digestion and can be stored for a relatively long time," said Wang Fei, a villager. Making the sister-zongzi is not only making a tasty food, but serves as a sign of cultural inheritance and neighborhood friendship, the delicious zongzi is often shared among villagers to experience the joy and warmth of the festival, Wang said. "The custom of making sister zongzi in Xinhua Village has been passed down for generations, symbolizing that all our brothers and sisters, relatives, friends and neighbors are like this sister-zongzi, sticking together, united and harmonious, helping each other and creating a better life together," he said.
