Storyline China's bamboo shoots export shoots up as peak season arrives Yingde City, in south China's Guangdong Province, has long been known as the country's "hometown" of bamboo shoots, and its currently peak export season for related enterprises. At this canned food plant, items are labelled and packed automatically. This batch is destined for the Americas. At another factory in the city, machines are working 24-hours a day preparing instant bamboo shoots that will be exported to southeast Asian countries. Shen Jianxia, head, bamboo shoots factory: "These snack bamboo shoots are spicy and sour for Southeast Asian consumers. Sales have more than doubled last year." Besides the shoots themselves, bamboo shoot shells are a degradable natural fiber that's used as a material to make other things. This company uses it to make disposable tableware, like plates, bowls, and containers. Yuan Xiuping, head, bamboo products factory: "Our disposable tableware is the best seller in American market, because the raw materials are biodegradable, with degradation of over 93 percent within 128 days." Data shows that Yingde City exported roughly 5,000 tons of bamboo shoots and related products from January to November last year, an increase of about five and a half percent compared to 2024.
