Storyline: Palestinians displaced by Israel's offensives against the Gaza Strip are struggling to survive an unfolding famine with insufficient humanitarian aid supplies, although Israel agreed to ease its total blockade on the enclave last week. UN life-saving aid is trickling into Gaza after Israel's relaxation of a nearly three-month blockade of food and supplies, but local residents still complained that the distributed food and necessities are far from enough to meet the soaring humanitarian needs. At a camp for Internally Displaced People in southern Gaza's Khan Younis, packs of fresh bread finally reached displaced families in urgent need on Saturday. Each pack has about 20 loaves and weighs some two kilograms. However, bread distribution every other day is dramatically insufficient to meet the basic needs of a population already living on the brink of survival. In the face of mounting international objections over the total blockade imposed on March 2 and condemnation over the risk of widespread famine, Israel started to allow aid trucks to enter Gaza on May 19, but the United Nations said it was not until May 22 that limited quantities of flour were distributed in southern and central Gaza. More than 53,900 people have been killed in Gaza by Israel's bombing and ground campaign since October 7, 2023, according to Palestinian health authorities. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Muhammad Musallam, displaced Palestinian: "We can only get packs of bread every other day. This amount is not at all enough. There are five people in my family and this amount of bread can't even sustain three meals a day." 4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammad Zenoun, person in charge of one IDP camp in Gaza (partially overlaid with shot 5): "There are about 5,000 displaced families here. We didn't receive all the bread, only some. And we couldn't meet everyone's need. The amount of aid coming in now is very small. It's far from meeting people's basic needs." SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Alaa Al-Zamar, displaced Palestinian: "We have received almost nothing in the past three months except for a bag of bread distributed in the past few days. We strongly request that more aid be brought into Gaza because famine here is extremely serious." 11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammed Khalaf, displaced Palestinian (partially overlaid with shot 12): "We have been struggling for the past three months and can only feed my children with lentils. They can't even walk because of hunger. This little amount of bread is not enough to feed them. We hope to get protected from the international community or other Arab nations. The most important thing is to stop this injustice." [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 12. Packs of bread [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 13. Various of displaced Gaza people getting bread.
