United States - December 10, 2025 A multi-property suspected dogfighting operation in Clay and Union counties has led to the rescue of over 80 dogs and puppies, authorities confirmed. Humane World for Animals, formerly the Humane Society of the United States, assisted at the request of the Clay County and Union County Sheriff’s Offices, with support from veterinarians from the University of Florida Veterinary Forensics Sciences Laboratory. Search and seizure warrants were executed early on December 10 across three properties. Investigators found many dogs chained with plastic barrels or makeshift structures as their only shelter, while others were confined to filthy outdoor hutches, stepping in their own waste. On one Union County property, two young puppies were found whimpering alone without their mother. Numerous dogs bore scars consistent with fighting, with many underweight or suffering from skin issues, sores, or untreated wounds. A Clay County dog was missing a foot from a traumatic, untreated amputation. Investigators also recovered dogfighting paraphernalia, including treadmills and breeding equipment, on all properties. “Their scars tell a heartbreaking story—the sadness and suffering these dogs have endured is unimaginable,” said Kate MacFall, Florida state director for Humane World for Animals. Union County Sheriff Brad Whitehead emphasized the collaborative effort: “We continue to prove that our agency will not tolerate animal abuse and blatant criminal behavior.” Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook noted the critical role of community members and federal agencies in setting the investigation in motion. Dogfighting causes severe injuries, often fatal, and dogs used in these operations are specifically bred and conditioned for fighting. Across the U.S., such cruelty has been linked to other criminal activities including weapons, gambling, and drugs. The rescued dogs are being transported to a safe, confidential location where Humane World for Animals and RedRover Responders volunteers are providing care and treatment.
