INTERIOR OF MINIBUS (NIGHT SHOT)DAKAR, SENEGAL - MAY 28: A beloved symbol of Senegal’s capital, Dakar, and a key component of its urban transport system, the colorful “car rapide” minibuses may soon disappear as authorities push to modernize public transportation. Far more than just a means of getting around, the car rapide is deeply woven into the city’s cultural fabric — as iconic to Dakar as yellow taxis are to New York or red double-deckers to London. These brightly painted minibuses are featured on souvenirs including keychains and magnets, and are even sold as miniature models, celebrated for their vivid colors and intricate designs. What sets them apart visually are the religious and cultural messages emblazoned across their bodies. Wolof expressions and Islamic references such as “Touba,” the holy city of the Mouride; “Ahmadu Bamba,” Sheikh Amadou Bamba, the founder of the Mouride Brotherhood; “Alhamdulillah” (praise be to God); and “merci mama” (thank you, mother) are commonly seen. Despite their cultural and artistic importance, the aging vehicles are under threat. As Dakar seeks to upgrade its transit infrastructure, the future of these iconic minibuses remains uncertain.
