Tourists injured when speedboat hits wooden fishing vessel in Thailand
Two tourists were injured when a speedboat crashed into a wooden fishing vessel in southern Thailand.
Dramatic footage shows the moment the speedboat Phuket Freeday slammed into the midsection of the smaller long-tail boat Natmeena, off the coast of Krabi on May 30.
The impact overturned the wooden vessel, sending two Chinese holidaymakers and the fisherman, Mart Rakaree, 62, overboard.
Onlookers on the speedboat were rattled by the crash. They stood trying to view the carnage as the speedboat operator then circled around to carry out a rescue.
Authorities said the two Chinese tourists suffered minor injuries, while the Mart had a fractured collarbone.
A spokesman for the Koh Phi Phi Police Station said: 'The speedboat had picked up 28 tourists from Phuket and was headed for Koh Phi Phi Le island. We cannot confirm which party is at fault yet. We are working with the Krabi Marine Office and will summon both parties for further questioning.'
Both vessels have reportedly been temporarily banned from sailing while investigations are ongoing.
Mart's son Thewet Dongtuk, 45, accused the speedboat driver of negligence and demanded they pay for his father's hospital costs.
He said: 'The speedboat was speeding when it crashed into the middle of my father's boat, overturning it and throwing him and the tourists into the sea.
'Thankfully, the tourists weren't seriously hurt, but my father suffered a broken collarbone and his boat, the source of his income, was damaged.
'Until now, the other party hasn't contacted us. They are even insisting that my father was at fault, even though he was driving normally. The speedboat driver should have clearly seen the path ahead. The sea isn't like a road where your view can be blocked. I urge the authorities to swiftly resolve this issue.'
