Suspect driving stolen backhoe 'tries to run over policeman' in Nevada
This is the dramatic moment a suspect behind the wheel of a stolen backhoe allegedly attempted to run over a police officer in Nevada.
The Henderson Police Department received a 911 call from a security guard reporting that a thief, later identified as Juan Rincon Carreno, had hijacked a front loader from a secure construction site.
Officer Megan Jacobs, who was nearby, arrived to find Carreno manoeuvring the 2007 Kawasaki construction vehicle along a public street on the morning of January 4.
Bodycam footage shows the officer attempting to stop the suspect after he had hot-wired the heavy machinery.
Despite repeated commands to stop, Juan continued to drive onto the motorway, even ramming a patrol car.
In an attempt to halt the vehicle, Officer Jacobs fired five warning shots into the air. However, Juan accelerated towards her, forcing her to retreat.
As backup arrived and sirens filled the neighbourhood, Sergeant Lance Jaworski reached the scene.
Juan then steered the backhoe towards him, smashing into two patrol cars and several vehicles parked at the roadside. Sergeant Jaworski then fired four shots as the front loader became wedged against the crushed cars.
Seizing the opportunity, officers moved in to apprehend the suspect. During a violent struggle, two officers and Carreno fell 7ft (2.1 m) from the vehicle to the ground.
Carreno sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and leg and was taken to the hospital. Two officers were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The security guard who raised the alarm recalled seeing Carreno on CCTV jumping a fence before threatening her with a screwdriver.
Following the arrest, police recovered a shoebox containing incoherent writings and suicidal ideologies.
Juan Rincon Carreno now faces multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder, resisting an officer with a deadly weapon, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, and significant property damage.
Chief Matthew Murnane praised the force, saying: 'The suspect was using heavy machinery in a reckless manner, creating an immediate threat. I am proud of how our officers performed.'
