This is the bizarre moment a hyper-localised rainstorm soaked only one side of a road, while the other remained dry.

Footage shows rain showers pouring over one side of a highway in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, while the opposite motorway and the surrounding area stayed bone dry.

Several motorists can be seen stopping in the middle of the road, visibly puzzled by the surreal weather phenomenon on June 3.

Cai Zonghua, Acting Director of the Kaohsiung Meteorological Station, said: 'In the early morning, Kaohsiung was experiencing a land breeze. The southwest wind brought convective activity, and this rain band slowly moved inland along the prevailing southwest wind.'

The Central Meteorological Administration explained that unstable weather in the southern region was caused by moist southwest winds blowing from sea to land.

Temperatures in the region hovered near 30-degrees Celsius, and the sudden downpour hitting the hot asphalt created visible steam rising from the road.

Authorities advised motorists to bring rain gear and remain cautious due to the heat to avoid heat stroke.

Localised rain can occur when convective clouds form, releasing rainfall in concentrated areas while leaving nearby spots untouched. The uneven moisture distribution within the cloud may also lead to this unusual split in rainfall.
