Santoña, Spain - June 06, 2025 A woman was rescued in a dramatic operation by the Bizkaia Maritime Service of the Guardia Civil on Thursday evening after being trapped on rocks beneath the Faro del Caballo in Santoña. The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m., according to authorities. The woman had gone swimming with friends but was unable to return due to strong currents. She was found in a natural vault under the lighthouse, perched on a rocky ledge, suffering from multiple cuts and in a state of shock. The Guardia Civil’s patrol boat, Río Guadalete, was conducting fishing inspections nearby when it received a distress call via VHF channel 16. The crew immediately rushed to the scene, joined by the Río Trueba patrol from Laredo. Upon arrival, agents found three friends worried about the woman, who was trapped inside the rocky vault. The auxiliary boat from Río Guadalete entered the vault, locating her on the rocks, unresponsive to questions due to her condition. The rescue was challenging due to rough seas and the woman’s nervous state, which prevented her from climbing aboard. A Guardia Civil officer jumped to her aid, assisting in her evacuation to the auxiliary vessel. She was quickly taken to Santoña’s port, where medical services evaluated her. Agents provided warmth as she showed signs of hypothermia. The complex operation successfully saved her life.
