Italy: Activists Clash With Police While Trying To Post Protest Materials On Government Building
Italy - June 13, 2025 On June 13th, the movement BRUCIAMO TUTTO “We Burn Everything” carried out an act of nonviolent civil resistance. At 9:05 a.m., three activists arrived in front of the Department for Regional Affairs and Autonomies of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. Police were already on the scene. They identified the activists and confiscated flyers and banners placed on the ground. The materials read: “A Basic Income To Escape” and “220 More Anti Violence Centers For A Fair Freedom Income.” The activists denounced the repression and raised the issue of the lack of anti violence centers in Italy. One activist attempted to affix a flyer to the entrance wall using a stapler. Shortly after, the group tried to hang a large banner showing a map of the distribution of anti violence centers in the country. They managed to display the banner only partially before police stopped them and tore it from their hands. While one activist was giving a statement, another tried again to open a banner but was immediately blocked. The activists continued to speak and hold up flyers until 9:20 a.m., when police removed them and took them to the station, where they were reported. Activist Chloe explained the action’s purpose: to show that Italy has far fewer anti violence centers than required by the Istanbul Convention. To access the Freedom Income, individuals must be certified by a local center. But most regions lack enough of them. Only 25 provinces meet the minimum standard of one center per 50,000 women. Over 220 new centers are needed. Nearly 60% of provinces fall short, making fair access to the benefit impossible. The activists called for urgent action, saying anti violence centers are essential and must be guaranteed to protect lives.
