Rioters clashed with police as unrest grew in Honduras.

Protesters blocked a major highway, halting traffic during a demonstration in Choloma on May 9 afternoon.

Footage shows a platoon of riot police in full gear as activists set fire to tires and tree branches on the road.

Police reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area and believe the shooters may have been armed with weapons of various calibres.

The ordeal prompted authorities to call reinforcements from nearby units in the Sula Valley.

The highway was reportedly reopened later that evening, with police clearing debris, including burnt wood and tires, left by the demonstrators.

While some sections remained littered with waste, the road connecting Puerto Cortes, San Pedro Sula, and El Valle de Sula was mostly cleared.

Authorities said they hope future unrest can be addressed through dialogue to safeguard the public's right to free movement.

The country has been experiencing a surge in public demonstrations, driven by widespread frustration over economic hardship, government corruption, and escalating violence—reflecting deep-rooted discontent with Honduras's political and social conditions.
