AHMAD SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic) GAZA, PALESTINE - JUNE 14: Ahmed Falih Versh Agha, a 14-year-old Palestinian boy who lost his right arm in an Israeli airstrike, dreams of healing and returning to the football field. Ahmed was injured on April 3 when an airstrike hit a school in Gaza City, where his family had sought shelter following Israeli evacuation orders. The blast killed 31 people, most of them children. Ahmed was playing football with friends in the schoolyard when the attack occurred. A piece of shrapnel tore through his right arm and lodged in his abdomen, damaging his intestines. Now living in a tent with his family in the northern town of Beit Lahiya, Ahmed has undergone two surgeries. But he suffers from malnutrition due to absorption issues in his damaged intestines. The ongoing blockade on Gaza limits access to proper nutrition, causing his health to deteriorate further. His mother, Sawsan Versh Agha, said Ahmed was taken in critical condition to al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, where he was briefly declared dead. His right arm was later amputated, and his internal injuries remain severe. Despite not being fully recovered, Ahmed was discharged early to make room for other patients. He said he missed life before the war and just wanted to play football again. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 55,300 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis.
