Bungling driver gets stuck driving down Rome's historic Spanish Steps
A bungling driver became stuck while trying to drive down the historic Spanish Steps in Italy.
The pensioner, 80, was driving his grey Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan through Rome when he accidentally turned onto the landmark.
Footage shows him slowly negotiating the steep set of stairs as shocked locals watched in the early hours of the morning.
Police and fire crews arrived and helped him to safety before the car was lifted down by a crane on Tuesday, June 17.
Following the incident, the area was cordoned off, and public access to the Spanish Steps was temporarily restricted.
Archaeologists were also brought in to assess the site for any damage, which is a common occurrence with protected heritage sites.
Police said the driver was taken to hospital, where tests confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was unharmed following the ordeal.
