Storyline: Urban renewal revitalizes old factory complexes in eastern Chinese cities [Voice_over] Some cities in China are turning forgotten factories into thriving economic hubs, not through demolition, but through smart, incremental renewal. In east China's Jinan city, the 579 Baigongji area-once a sprawling used-goods market- has been turned into a vibrant cultural and tourism hotspot. The head of the project says the key to their success has been minor renovations with major impact. [Sound_bite] Wang Qun, head, 579 Baigongji: "Our minor renovations aren't just about bricks. It's about making small changes to bring about self-changes and achieving more by doing less. Of the 100,000-square-meter complex, only 27,000 square meters underwent renovation. The remaining 73,000 square meters were just simply decorated." [Voice_over] The complex is now home to more than 50 companies, with its success inspiring similar renovations across the region. In Nanchang, the Donghu Yiku Park recently underwent a facelift, but kept 90 percent of its Suzhou-style architecture. Shop owners say the "new" old-town feel has dramatically increased foot traffic. [Sound_bite] Yang Wen, shop owner: "It has greatly increased our foot traffic. We estimate about 300 visitors come here daily on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, often beyond our capacity to handle." [Voice_over] Experts say China's urban renewal isn't just about transforming cityscapes, but also about boosting domestic demand for quality development. [Sound_bite] Wang Kai, president, China Academy of Urban Planning Design: "The renewal of old blocks and old factory areas is a key means to make spatial and quality improvements and to add vitality and new economic growth momentum to cities. By shifting functions, upgrading business forms, and creating consumption scenarios, cities can forge new consumption spaces that are more appealing." [Voice_over] So far, officials say over 100 renewal projects have been launched across the city. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
