(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PALESTINIAN FISHERWOMAN MADLEEN KULLAB, AFTER WHOM FREEDOM BOAT NAMED SAYING: "I am Madleen Kullab, Gaza’s only female fisherwoman. I began fishing at the age of six, learning the trade alongside my father. We would go out together on a small paddle boat—fishing was not only our family’s tradition but also our only source of income. When I turned 13, my father fell ill and could no longer go out to sea. As the eldest child, I had no choice but to take his place. I continued the work on my own, becoming Gaza’s only female fisherwoman. When a boat was named Madleen in my honor, I felt deeply moved. People would say to me, “You’re the only fisherwoman in Gaza and the youngest in the world.” I was proud of that. When the Madleen set sail, I followed its journey closely through news reports on Al Jazeera. I wasn’t in direct contact with the crew, but I kept track of every update. We all hoped it would reach Gaza...The boat carried only humanitarian supplies—food, diapers, baby formula—and people who posed no threat. Its mission was simple: to send a message that Gaza, under siege for more than a year and a half, has been abandoned by the world. Their goal was to break the silence—and they succeeded. The message was delivered. People around the world responded with rallies, calls for action, and renewed attention to Gaza’s suffering. I hope the world keeps listening. I hope it stays true to its word and continues to act—until the war ends and Gaza can breathe freely again." 11. MADLEEN TENDING FISHNETGAZA, PALESTINE - JUNE 18: Intercepted by Israeli forces before reaching Gaza’s shores, the freedom boat Madleen could not deliver its symbolic aid. But for Gaza’s only female fisherwoman, Madleen Kullab — after whom the vessel was named — the mission was still a success. Despite being stopped and its activists detained and later deported, Madleen helped break what Kullab calls “the world’s silence” on the Gaza blockade and inspired a renewed global call to action. The boat, carrying humanitarian aid including food, diapers and baby formula, departed from San Giovanni Li Cuti Port in Catania, Italy, before being intercepted by Israel. Its aim was to highlight the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, under blockade for more than a year and a half. Madleen Kullab, 31, began fishing at age six. She took over the family trade alone at just 13 when her father became unable to work. Now a mother of four, she remains Gaza’s only female fisherwoman. “When a boat was named Madleen in my honor, I felt deeply moved,” she told Anadolu. “People would say to me, 'You’re the only fisherwoman in Gaza and the youngest in the world' I was proud of that." Although she had no direct contact with the crew, Kullab followed the boat’s journey through media reports, especially Al Jazeera. She said that even though many expected Israeli forces to block the boat, there was still hope it would reach Gaza. “Their goal was to break the silence—and they succeeded. The message was delivered. People around the world responded with rallies, calls for action, and renewed attention to Gaza’s suffering” Kullab described her sadness upon hearing the boat had been stopped. She also shared that Palestinian Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, one of the activists on board, later contacted her and expressed sorrow for what Palestinians in Gaza are enduring. According to the UN Human Rights Office, at least 503 Palestinian aid seekers have been killed and 3,000 others injured by Israeli fire in Gaza since May 27. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 56,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
