Brazilian tourist, 26, found dead inside volcano in Indonesia
A Brazilian female tourist who fell into a volcano in Indonesia was found dead on Tuesday evening.
Juliana Marins, 26, was trekking up Mount Rinjani in Lombok when she reportedly slipped and plunged from the hiking trail early morning on June 21.
She survived the initial 300-metre fall from a ridge overlooking the volcano's famous crater lake and was last seen on drone footage, distressed but alive as she sat on grey soil.
Local rescue teams battled for four days to reach the holidaymaker from Rio de Janeiro, but efforts were hampered by harsh terrain and poor weather conditions.
In a statement on June 24, the Mataram search and rescue (SAR) office said a thermal drone had found an unresponsive Juliana lying beside a crater.
Rescue team head Muhamad Hariyadi said: 'At 6 pm WITA, a rescuer from Basarnas named Khafid Hasyadi managed to reach the victim at a depth of 600 metres (1,968 feet). An examination was conducted, and no signs of life were found.
'Following this discovery, the SAR team stationed at the last place where the victim had been seen began setting up an evacuation system.'
Authorities said the evacuation was postponed until Wednesday morning to wait for the weather to clear.
Footage shows an orange rescue helicopter setting off toward the volcano. Rescuers putting on rappel gear were seen preparing to collect Juliana's body amid foggy conditions.
Juliana's devastated family has also confirmed her death. They said in a statement: 'Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was.
'With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive.
'We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.'
Police said Juliana, who works as a publicist and pole dancer, was hiking with a group and fell after she took a break due to exhaustion.
AKP Nikolas Osman, spokesman for the East Lombok Police, said: 'While heading to the summit of Rinjani on the way to the Cemara Tunggal area, the victim experienced fatigue and the guide at that time advised her to rest. Then the five guests in the tour group were taken by the guide to continue the journey.
'However, by the time he returned to fetch her, the Brazilian woman was already missing.'
Rescue teams were dispatched but were unable to immediately reach her. They later found she was no longer at her original position, suggesting she had tried to climb back up the slope.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a statement on X that diplomatic and consular services in Indonesia will provide full support to Juliana's family.
He said: 'I want to express my solidarity with her family – a solidarity that, I am certain, is also shared by the entire Brazilian people. May God comfort their hearts.'
Juliana had been on a solo trip across Asia since February. Before the incident, she had previously visited Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, documenting her journey on her social media.
Mount Rinjani is an active volcano located on the island of Lombok in Indonesia, standing at 3,700 metres (12,200 feet) and is the second highest volcano in the country. It is known for its stunning crater lake, Segara Anak, and is a popular destination for hikers and adventure seekers.
