An oil tanker explosion at a shipyard in Indonesia has left at least four people dead and five others injured.

Footage shows a massive plume of smoke rising from the burning vessel docked in Batam City, Riau Islands, on Tuesday, June 24. Workers were seen attempting to extinguish the blaze.

The tanker was reportedly undergoing repairs when a sudden and intense blaze erupted aboard at around 2:15 pm local time.

Batu Aji police chief Raden Bimo Dwi Lambang said: 'Four survivors suffered serious burns, and one sustained minor injuries.'

Due to access restrictions at the facility, emergency response and evacuation efforts were carried out by the shipyard's internal safety team.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with police continuing to collect witness statements and examine evidence at the scene.
