This is the moment a terrified couple fled as lightning struck above their heads.

CCTV footage shows the man and woman walking out of their house in Phetchabun, Thailand.

They lifted a wooden chair placed in the yard and carried it inside when a brief bright flash and an extremely loud thunderclap erupted in their area on June 25.

The frantic pair then dropped the furniture and sprinted back into the house to safety.

Meanwhile, the chair was left lying flat on the ground, toppling over from the impact.

The couple reportedly did not sustain any injuries from the incident but were badly shaken by the sheer force of the lightning.

Lightning poses a serious hazard due to its extreme voltage and intense heat, which can reach temperatures five times hotter than the surface of the sun.

It is capable of striking people or objects directly, while also producing dangerous ground currents and powerful shock waves.

Authorities advise that taking shelter indoors remains the safest precaution during thunderstorms.

Thailand and neighbouring Southeast Asian countries are entering their annual monsoon season, marked by soaring temperatures followed by intense rainstorms.
