Robots stumble their way through football tournament in China

On June 28, the RoBoLeague Robot Football Tournament was held at the Smart Esports Arena in Yizhuang, Beijing.

This marked China’s first fully autonomous 3-vs-3 humanoid robot AI football match—and served as the inaugural test event for the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games. Four teams participated: the Blaze team from Beijing Information Science and Technology University, the Power AI team and Huoshen team from Tsinghua University, and the Shanhai team from China Agricultural University.

All robots operated with full autonomy—no remote human control. Using real-time visual systems, they independently perceived the ball, goal, and teammates, making decisions on attacking, defending, and passing entirely through AI strategies. The robots required no human intervention and could get up after falling on their own.

During the match, the robot players engaged in fierce battles. Some fell during collisions but stood back up on their own, while others had to be carried off on stretchers.

After three hours of competition, Tsinghua University's Huoshen team claimed the championship, with China Agricultural University’s Shanhai team finishing as runner-up. The Power AI team from Tsinghua and the Blaze team from BISTU tied for third place.

The event was held as a preview for the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games.
