The exercises followed heightened Chinese military activity near Taiwan and remarks from Chinese President Xi Jinping signaling renewed pressure on the self-ruled island. In Taipei, supermarket staff and local residents took part in emergency response simulations designed to improve readiness for potential attacks. Taiwan on Wednesday launched the longest live-fire segment of its annual Han Kuang military exercises, focusing on how the island counters China's "gray zone" tactics, according to Focus Taiwan. The 10-day drills center on responses to gray-zone harassment, joint anti-landing operations, and resilient island defense, with several US-made weapons making their debut. On day one, Taiwan simulated Chinese militia boats and coast guard harassment in nearby waters. Naval forces were deployed along the coast in anticipation of escalation. Mobile radar systems and anti-ship missile units were positioned at strategic points, while special forces secured ports and other vital infrastructure to ensure societal continuity. Maj. Gen. Tung Chi-hsing said the initial three days focused on joint responses to gray-zone tactics. Later phases would shift to full-scale combat scenarios. In response to the drills, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that Beijing’s stance “on opposing military ties between the US and Taiwan region is consistent and very firm.” Mao told a live-streamed news conference that “Taiwan’s efforts to seek independence through force will not get through.” Earlier, China on Tuesday said the Taiwanese drill is nothing but a “self-deceiving trick" played by the island.
