This is the exciting moment water buffaloes hurtled through a muddy field in a traditional buffalo race.

Footage shows the farm animals bolting across the waterlogged paddy during the annual Buffalo Racing Festival in Chonburi, southern Thailand, on Sunday.

Farmers also ran through the flooded field, spurring their buffaloes onward using whips.

Authorities said the yearly competition draws many tourists to the province, showcasing the region's traditions deeply rooted in agriculture.

Wathana Thai Charoen, Mueang Chonburi district chief, said: 'This event aims to preserve and pass down the tradition of Thai buffalo racing so it doesn't fade away. We also want to promote cultural tourism, strengthen community unity, and encourage participation from all sectors.

'It gives farmers and buffalo breeders a chance to showcase their skills and earn income through related activities.'
