Storyline: China emerges as leading country in terms of AI-related patent holdings: officials [Voice_over] Chinese authorities say as of this June, the number of valid domestic invention patents reached over 5 million, an increase of 13.2 percent year on year. The country has also collected nearly 49 million valid registered trademarks, a year-on-year increase of 6.6 percent. [Sound_bite] Shen Changyu, Director, China National Intellectual Property Administration: "China has effectively promoted the transformation and industrialization of a large number of patents, with the industrialization rate of enterprise invention patents up from 44.9 percent in 2020 to 53.3 percent in 2024. In addition, the dominant position of enterprises in technological innovation continues to be enhanced in China. There were 524-thousand domestic enterprises that held valid invention patents in June 2025." [Voice_over] More importantly, officials say China has emerged as the leading country in terms of artificial intelligence, new energy vehicles, and biomedicine related patent holdings globally. On the other hand, China has also established partnerships with over 80 countries and regions in IP cooperation work. [Sound_bite] Shen Changyu, Director, China National Intellectual Property Administration: "The three fields with the highest growth rates of valid domestic invention patents in China by June 2025 were information technology management methods, computer technology and medical technology, featuring year-on-year rises of 34.1 percent, 22.7 percent and 19.8 percent, respectively. These figures were significantly higher than the average growth rate of valid domestic invention patents." [Voice_over] Chinese authorities say China has maintained close cooperation on intellectual property with Belt and Road partners, ASEAN members and BRICS countries, part of its effort to advance high-level opening-up.
