Passengers surge through airport as flights resume in Macau following typhoon
Passengers surged through Macau airport as flights resumed following Typhoon Wipha.
Footage shows crowds of travellers filling the terminal on July 21 as operations restarted after freak weather disrupted services.
The Macau International Airport (MIA) said in a statement on Sunday: 'Due to typhoon Wipha, a total of 140 flights - 69 arrivals and 71 departures - were cancelled on July 20th and 21st, while 13 flights, seven arrivals and six departures, have been rescheduled.
'MIA's Emergency Operations Centre remained active before the signal no. 8 was hoisted early this morning, coordinating closely with airlines, ground handlers, and other stakeholders to ensure a swift and organized response, whenever necessary.
'Following the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau's (SMG) downgrade of typhoon warnings, MIA is gradually resuming normal operations. The first cargo flight landed at 20:20, and all 172 scheduled flights, 86 arrivals and 86 departures, are expected to operate as planned tomorrow, including 10 arrivals and two departures from now until 4 in the morning with a total number of 2000 passengers.'
At the same time, Hong Kong International Airport authorities said they will operate 1,076 flights on Monday as they work to clear the backlog caused by the storm.
More than 500 flights were cancelled on Sunday, impacting approximately 100,000 passengers.
The Hong Kong Observatory raised the T10 storm signal at 9:20 am on Sunday, the first time the highest storm warning has been issued since September 2023.
In neighbouring Vietnam, a tourist boat was capsized by the storm, leaving dozens of passengers dead on Saturday. The vessel reportedly overturned after being hit by choppy waves and heavy rain off the coast of Ha Long Bay shortly after 2 pm local time.
Wipha has been downgraded to a tropical storm after hitting mainland China on July 20.
