Two boats collided off the coast of Brazil during a trip, leaving passengers stunned and scrambling for safety.

The vessels crashed near Itaparica Island in the Bay of All Saints while en route to Salvador on Tuesday afternoon, July 22.

Authorities confirmed the incident involved the catamaran Morro de Sao Paulo, which was carrying 121 passengers, and a fishing boat with at least three people on board.

Footage shows panicked holidaymakers wearing life jackets as they waited in the water while emergency responders carried out rescues.

The passenger vessel was seen partially submerged, while the fishing boat was reportedly split in half by the impact.

Rescuers said rough seas made the operation more difficult.

The Brazilian Navy said in a statement: 'Upon learning of the incident, the 2nd Naval Command contacted the Eastern Maritime Search and Rescue Service Coordination Center (SALVAMAR Leste) and ordered the immediate deployment of speedboats and teams from the Bahia Port Authority, as well as the Patrol Vessel Dourado, Patrol Vessel Guaratuba, and Corvette Caboclo, subordinate to the Eastern Naval Patrol Group Command. The objective is to assist the vessels involved and conduct search and rescue operations.

'At the same time, the Mutual Aid Plan was activated, mobilising vessels sailing nearby to assist with relief efforts. The tugboats Piata and Pituba, which were operating nearby, are already providing assistance in rescuing crew and passengers.

'The operation also has the integrated support of the Bahia Military Fire Department (CBM-BA), the Bahia Military Police Air Group (GRAER), the Bahia Pilotage and civilian vessels operating in the region.'

No injuries were reported. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether human error, mechanical failure, or poor visibility contributed to the collision.

Officials also reminded vessel operators to strictly observe maritime safety protocols and follow designated sea routes, especially in heavily trafficked waters, to prevent similar incidents.
