Egypt: Gaza experiencing world's worst humanitarian crisis
People in the Gaza Strip is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis across the world, as the entry and distribution of aid supplies face enormous difficulties, said Abeer Etefa, senior regional communications officer for Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The hunger crisis in Gaza has now reached a "new and astonishing" level, with a third of the population not eating for multiple days in a row, according to the WFP. Etfa said the Gaza population is suffering from a systematic policy of starvation, as the aid is piling up at the border but Israel is not allowing it to enter. It is very likely that a real famine has already occurred in Gaza, but it has not been officially declared because the security situation makes it impossible to obtain numbers and statistics, said the WFP official. It is generally very difficult to get food aid and humanitarian supplies into the country, and more than 2 million people are living in extremely harsh conditions. The malnutrition rate and food insecurity level in the region are already the highest among all conflict zones in the world. We are facing huge challenges. The safety of convoys cannot be guaranteed, and it is difficult to determine the areas or routes that need to be reached."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] Gaza Strip - June 26, 2025 3. There is a severe shortage of food in the market. Even if you can find it, a bag of flour costs more than 100 U.S. dollars. Currently, more than 40,000 tons of food are stranded in the border areas, whether at border with Egypt or with Jordan, or through Israel's Ashdod port. These life-saving grains have been backlogged for weeks or even months and can be quickly transported in at any time, but the reality is that they are only allowed in in a drip manner, and even if they enter, they are in insignificant quantities."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] Gaza City, Gaza Strip - July 5, 2025 6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abeer Etefa, Senior Regional Communications Officer for Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe, WFP: "Declaring famine requires statistical measurement based on specific scientific criteria. To achieve this, data from hospitals and households must be available to monitor child and adult mortality rates in order to determine that the area is in a catastrophic state and declare famine. However, we do not have this data at present. When it is so difficult to get supplies in, you can imagine how difficult it is to collect data."; Gaza Strip - Recent 9. Various of tents.
