On Saturday, July 26, the protesters, carrying photos of Palestinian children affected by the war, read aloud a statement calling for an end to attacks on civilians and urging compliance with international law. Inside the church, some people expressed support for the demonstrators, while others reacted negatively. Eyewitnesses said the activists were verbally harassed by some individuals as they peacefully left the church. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 59,700 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
