One local was killed and eight others injured when a gunman opened fire at a festival just days after a deadly mass shooting in Thailand.

Residents screamed when Ekkaphot Sapthon, 41, unleashed a barrage of bullets into the crowd during the Kamlon Festival in Nakhon Si Thammarat in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Footage shows terrified villagers fleeing in panic as several gunshots rang out at the fairground at around 1:30 am local time.

Police responded to the rampage, subduing Ekkaphot by shooting him twice in the arm.

The drunk suspect was taken to the Lan Saka Hospital along a man named Chatree, who later died of several bullet wounds.

Officers said eight people were injured, including one who was in critical condition. They recovered bullet casings and a 9mm pistol with two empty magazines at the scene.

Police Captain Jirawuth Aksornkul of the Lan Saka Police Station said the rampage began when Ekkaphot allegedly tried to attack Chatri's friend, a lawyer, who had previously had him imprisoned.

He said: 'Witnesses said the suspect was seen arguing with a group at the event before briefly leaving. When he returned, there was a scuffle, then he pulled a gun and shot Chatree when he tried to intervene.

'The suspect tried to flee, shooting at a group of teenagers near the concert stage as he ran away.'

Ekkaphot was detained on suspicion of attempted murder.

The incident unfolded just two days after another gunman killed five people then shot himself in Bangkok, in a rampage which police attributed to a personal grudge.

Noi Praidaen, 61, reportedly opened fire on security guards at the Tor Kor Market in Bangkok on Monday. He killed four guards and a vendor before walking towards a bench and turning the gun on himself.

Police Lieutenant General Sayam Boonsom, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the gun attack sparked from a years-long dispute between Noi and the guards.

Thailand has one of the highest gun ownership and gun homicide rates among Southeast Asian nations.

Though Thai authorities have vowed to tighten gun control, there are around 4 million unregistered guns, often smuggled from war-torn countries, in circulation, the Ministry of Interior said in 2023.
