An endangered golden cat caught in a pig snare was rescued by forest rangers.

The wild feline had wandered into a plantation in search of food when its leg was caught in a trap set by farmers to deter wild boars in West Java, Indonesia, on July 27.

Footage shows the frightened animal struggling to free itself, unable to escape the contraption.

Locals were alerted by unusual rustling in the bushes and upon spotting the cat, they immediately contacted forest rangers for help.

Village chief Ottrinaldi said: 'The animal was found alive, and the community quickly asked for assistance from authorities to evacuate it.'

A team was dispatched to the site, where they sedated the cat and safely freed it from the snare.

It was taken to a conservation facility for treatment of its injured leg, according to Edi Susilo, head of the Pasaman Resort Natural Resources and Conservation Agency.

The golden cat, a carnivorous species native to Southeast and parts of East Asia, is known for its distinctive golden-brown coat and is found in the wild on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan.
