Fishermen held a ceremony before burying a dead Bryde's whale that was found washed up on the beach.

Footage shows locals gathering around the large marine animal while performing a traditional mourning ritual in Kien Giang, Vietnam.

The 40ft (12m) carcass, which had drifted near the island coast, was wrapped in red cloth as incense was lit around it.

Authorities later used an excavator to bury the 10-tonne whale on a beach near the Ong Nam Hai Shrine.

Some bones were collected by devotees to be offered at the shrine as part of spiritual practice.

Locals believe whales are sacred protectors of those at sea and carry out the rites to honour the creature.
